ARCH 653 - BIM Final Project

BIM Visual Analysis

For this BIM Final Project, I wanted to explore the capabilities of programming for visual analysis using a plug in through Revit, called Dynamo. Here, I researched the methods for applying parameters to a panel solar shading device that were influenced to pivot based on the sun path and orientation. This exploration provides the opportunity to design and create aesthetically driven and efficient solar shading devices that are relatable to the identity of the project type.
The programming concepts are using parameters to identify and establish the geometry, pivot placement, and the movement direction of how you want the shading device to operate. Additionally, using Dynamo will apply a database pertinent to satisfy the intentions of the solar shading device.

Solar Shading and Sun Path Integration

Recorded Video of Design and Application -

Creating Panel Geometry -
  • using adaptive components, point elements, reference planes and lines to create a conceptual model of shading device
  • applied a texture to introduce interesting shading effects

Identifying Parameters -
  • created a rotation parameter that controlled the pivoting operation and movement of the panel along appointed reference planes

Model Representation -
  • oriented the shading devices in a horizontal placement to visually represent shading devices along multi-story building façade
  • established the shading devices to be place in a southward facing direction

Dynamo Database -
  • researched and developed a working database controlled by the sun settings, sun elements, and sun orientation
  • provided a connection between the panel adaptive components and sun elements

Revit Model and Dynamo Application -
  • completed a successful application and integration between the shading devices and database to pivot and shade accurately to the relation of the sun path rising and setting.
